£5,000 lost on average on faulty products – Personal injury cost could be higher
Financial costs are high, but the cost of injury could be greater still
The average person in the UK will lose £4,950 on faulty goods they have bought, but have not bothered to take back, according to the Department of Business Innovation and Skills. 48% of respondents said they had at least one faulty item at home that they had not returned for a refund or an exchange, with a third of people having up to 5 faulty items in their homes.
According to the survey, there is a gender gap when it comes to returning faulty goods. Women fare much better than men in terms of the financial impact of un-returned products, as they lose on average £71 a year from not returning goods, compared with men who are left, on average, £89 out of pocket. Over a lifetime, this means that the average man will not return goods valued at £5,465, compared to £4,658 for women. Research for the study was undertaken as part of the ‘Know Your Consumer Rights’ campaign.
Faulty product personal injuries – could un-returned goods be to blame?
With all these defective products lying around in houses and garages across the UK, there could be the potential for a number of people to be injured whilst attempting to use them. While most people who didn’t return a faulty product would probably throw it away, if these objects are left around the house, there is always the possibility that they could end up being used by someone unaware of their defects, such as children, or visitors to your house, and could therefore cause a personal injury.
