£52,000 compensation for mesothelioma sufferer who made a claim using new government legislation
According to the BBC news website, a young father from County Durham has received £52,000 compensation after contracting mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos. County Durham County Council said the man made his claim with the help of MacMillan Cancer Support, using a new piece of government legislation, the Child Maintenance and Other Payments Act.
Under the new legislation mesothelioma sufferers can claim amounts ranging from £8,197 to £52,772 depending upon the age at which they were diagnosed with this form of asbestos related cancer, which affects the lining of the lungs. The legislation was aimed at making a broader group of people eligible for compensation if they have been exposed to asbestos, not just those who were exposed whilst at work. Access to compensation has now been opened up to self employed people or those exposed to asbestos dust from someone else’s clothes or the environment in which they lived.
