Poligrip and Fixodent denture glue health concerns

Camps Solicitors have been contacted in recent weeks by members of the public complaining of numbness, difficulties with balance and anaemia after using a popular brand of denture glue.  These symptoms are believed to have been caused by a build-up in the body of the metal zinc, an ingredient in the denture glues, which can be harmful when present in large quantities in the body.

The Poligrip and Fixodent ranges of denture glue are the brands that have been linked to the health concerns.  Poligrip’s manufacturer announced last month that it would be removing zinc from its denture glue products.  That manufacturer has also advised people who have used more than the recommended amount of denture glue to stop using the products and seek medical advice from their doctor.

Problems with the build-up of zinc are believed to be linked to badly-fitting dentures that require more than the recommended amount of denture glue to hold them in place.  Although zinc is not absorbed in the mouth, it can be absorbed if any of the denture glue is accidentally swallowed.  Already in the United States several lawsuits have been filed by users of the glues who allege that they have suffered nerve damage from zinc poisoning.  Symptoms mentioned in the lawsuits include weakness, numbness and anaemia.
