The North London borough of Camden is to become home to London’s first naked street in an effort to cut accidents on one of the capital’s busiest thoroughfares, Camden High Street.
The ‘Naked Street’ idea was pioneered in the Netherlands as a way of reducing accidents by making motorists and pedestrians pay more attention to each other. Making a street ‘Naked’ involves removing as much street furniture – things like sign posts, bollards, railings and electricity cupboards – as possible to create a wide, uncluttered space. As well as removing many of the things that commonly clutter up the average high street, the pavement will be widened and the roadway reduced to a single lane carriageway.
A key aim of the plan is to take drivers out of their comfort zone by making them more aware of pedestrians and cyclists, who have been involved in around 27 accidents on the road in the past three years. By narrowing the road space available to motorists, and removing the designated crossings, the idea is to encourage people to cross wherever they like on the road. Naturally, they are being encouraged to make eye contact with drivers approaching them before they start crossing.
With the busy Camden market, which attracts millions of visitors every year nearby, it is hoped this scheme will reduce the high level of accidents on Camden High Street.
