Ice and snow cause widespread disruption on UK roads
It really has been a winter of discontent as far as weather conditions are concerned and as the majority of the population returns to work today, for some there will be no let-up in the wintery weather. With temperatures in some areas dropping as low as -12C, widespread frosts and snowfall has meant that some roads, especially those over higher ground, look set to remain blocked well into this week.
December 2009 was the coldest for 13 years and it looks likely that the cold weather will continue to affect the UK well into this month. Areas such as Oldham in Greater Manchester have seen their heaviest snowfall for 20 years, and across the country a number of schools and businesses remain closed due to the snow.
With more snow and ice forecast, stockpiles of grit have begun to run out in areas such as a Fife in Scotland, however new deliveries of grit and salt are underway. Snowfall is expected over Northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Monday and Tuesday this week, which is likely to lead to treacherous driving conditions for early morning commuters in particular.
