Glasgow to Oban service de-rails and catches fire in highlands
Eight people have been taken to hospital in Scotland following a derailment of a train on the Glasgow to Oban line through the highlands yesterday. The incident happened near to the Falls of Cruachan station, and the front carriage of the train has been left precariously balanced on a steep embankment at the side of the railway line. Although no-one was seriously hurt in the accident, some 60 people were evacuated from the train which caught fire shortly after derailing.
The accident happened shortly before 9pm on Sunday as the train was on its way towards Oban. Passengers described hearing a sudden rumble and seeing bags and shelves flying around the carriage as the train left the tracks, this was quickly followed by balls of flame on the outside of the carriage as part of the train caught fire. Emergency services declared the derailment (which took place in a remote part of the highlands) a major incident and helicopters assisted the emergency services in taking the injured away for treatment at hospitals in Glasgow, Oban and Lochgilphead.
The line and the A85 road which runs along side it have been closed as engineers try to prevent the derailed carriage from slipping further down the embankment and onto the road. It seems from initial reports that the train hit some boulders that had fallen onto the track after a landslide, something that this particular stretch of railway line is notorious for.
