Bus accidents in Manchester hit the headlines – again

Second serious incident within a week in Manchester

Only days after a tragic bus accident in Manchester City Centre was narrowly averted by a quick thinking bus passenger, another serious incident involving an out-of-control bus in Manchester has resulted in the tragic death of a 60 year old man.

In yesterday’s accident, which took place in the Manchester suburb of Dukinfield, a single-decker bus crashed through the front wall of a betting shop, killing a man in its path.  The bus, which was the number 346, ended up stuck halfway into the betting shop after its driver had apparently lost control trying to avoid another pedestrian, according to news reports.

Apart from the man who was fatally injured when the front of the bus hit him, there appeared to be no other injuries.  It is still unclear whether or not the man who was killed was on the pavement in front of the betting shop or whether he was inside at the time of the accident.  The 30 bus passengers and the driver escaped without serious injury.

The accident in Dukinfield came only a week after a similar tragedy in Manchester City Centre was narrowly avoided by the quick thinking of a bus passenger.  Fitness Instructor Alex Jenkins was on the number 263 bus when its driver, a 73-year old man, collapsed at the wheel.  Mr Jenkins managed to steer the bus, which was in the middle of morning rush hour traffic, safely to the side of the road where it was stopped when it hit a roadside parking meter.
