Councillor demands action to curb road accident deaths
I read an interesting article recently about a Bradford councillor who was calling on the government to provide more money for road safety schemes in a bid to cut the number of road traffic accidents in her town. Bradford and the wider Yorkshire area currently sees one of the highest accident rates in the country for serious injuries and fatalities.
New data from the Institute of Advanced Motorists shows that people in Yorkshire are more likely to be killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents than anywhere else in the country. Despite a 50% fall in the number of serious injuries on the roads, the number of fatal road traffic accidents in the Bradford area of Yorkshire in particular doubled in the first 3 months of this year compared with the same period in 2008, according to figures from the Police-led West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership.
A councillor from the Bradford area spoken to the local press about the shocking road safety statistics from the IAM and the WYCRP; Councillor Anne Hawkesworth said: “The big problem is that Yorkshire and Humber does not get the allocation of highway funding that the rest of the country gets. The only way we can hope to eliminate accident hotspots is if we get more investment.”
