Cardiff has highest rate of accidents for people on two wheels
1 in 5 cycling accidents on Welsh roads happens in the capital Cardiff, according to government statistics. These stats, covering the period from 1999 to 2008 show nearly 1,000 bicycle riders were injured in accidents in Cardiff, out of just over 5,000 accidents recorded for the whole of Wales during the same period. In fact, Cardiff came bottom out of the 22 local authorities in Wales, with an injury rate of 30 injuries per 100,000 people each year, twice that of the next largest city, Swansea.
Fortunately for Welsh cyclists, there was some good news to report, as over the 9 year period the number of accidents and injuries suffered by cyclists had fallen across all areas, and since 1979 there has been a 60% decline in the number killed or seriously injured. Nevertheless, 53 bike riders lost their lives in accidents between 1999 and 2008.
The statistics also revealed men were far more likely to be injured than women whilst cycling, accounting for 86% of those injured, although it was unclear whether this was due to a larger number of men cycling than women. Similarly, the vast majority of accidents (84%) occurred in areas with a 30mph speed limit, corresponding with built-up areas such as towns and cities where more people are likely to use their bikes during the rush hour to get to work or school.
