Seven fatal cycling accidents involving bikes and lorries this year
Accident rates amongst motorcyclists and cyclists in London remain high, despite several initiatives aimed to cut the numbers of people killed or injured in collisions with buses, lorries and other road vehicles. The latest crash happened only this morning and led to the closure of London Bridge, one of the main North-South routes in Central London.
In an accident on King William Street in London, a motorcycle, a bicycle and a bus collided, leaving the motorcyclist and cyclist needing treatment in hospital for multiple injuries. Police closed off the Northbound and Southbound carriageways of London Bridge as well as Monument Street and Arthur Street whilst the scene of the accident was cleared. This morning’s crash was the latest in a series of serious accidents this year that have resulted in the deaths of seven cyclists; after collisions with heavy goods vehicles.
There are already several initiatives underway in London to cut the numbers of people being killed in accidents on the road. After today’s accident police were handing out special mirrors to truck drivers on The Mall and in Trafalgar Square. The mirrors, known as Fresnel mirrors, are designed to improve the field of view in the rear-view mirrors of trucks and other heavy goods vehicles. Two “Exchanging Places” roadshows, backed by cycling safety campaigners, gave cyclists the chance to climb into HGV cabs to see for themselves how hard it is for truck drivers to see bikes. According to Metropolitan Police Inspector Graham Horwood, “Although the number of people cycling in London has increased, collisions between cyclists and trucks remains a significant problem.”
