Campaign by parents of injured toddler
The maximum jail term for Dangerous Driving is likely to be increased from 2 years to 5 by the government. The change is thought to be the result of a campaign run by the parents of a toddler who was left paralysed after being hit by a speeding motorist three years ago. The announcement was made today by Justice Minister Jack Straw.
Cerys Edwards was only 1 year old when she was left paralysed and on a ventilator after being hit by a car that was being driven at 70mph in a 30mph zone. The driver of the car received 21 months in jail, but under the new proposals, someone who commits a similar offence could receive up to a 60 months sentence. The announcement of the change in government policy comes after 18 months of campaigning by Cerys’ parents.
