The government has unveiled its updated plans to improve road safety for motorcyclists. The new Motorcycling Strategy Action Plan sets out the steps the government will be taking to reduce the number of motorcyclists killed or injured on Britain’s roads.
In the words of Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick, “Motorcyclists are the most vulnerable group on Britain’s roads today. They account for 1% of road traffic, but 20% of all those killed on the road.” Figures from the department of transport show that in 2006 over 6,000 motorcyclists and moped riders were killed or seriously injured on UK roads.
The new action plan comes at a time when, despite a reduction in the overall number of accidents involving motorcyclists, the number of those killed or seriously injured has showed little decline over the past 15 years. The plan mentions the use of a new safety assessment program which will examine new safety technologies so that they can be incorporated in future bikes. There will also be work to develop a system to report diesel spills and other highway defects that have a much greater effect on safety for motorcycle users than other motorists due to the instability of bikes and their tendency to skid.
