High speed road accident claims

Higher velocity accidents lead to more fatalities

At Camps Solicitors we deal with all levels of road traffic accident, from moderate impacts in residential and urban areas to serious high-speed multiple vehicle crashes on motorways and major roads.  Whilst no road accident is ever a trivial matter, being involved in a high-speed crash typically results in more serious injuries to the drivers and any passengers travelling with them as well as causing more damage to the vehicles involved.

Last year the Department for Transport released a report looking at the relationship between speed and the severity of injuries suffered by car drivers.  This report used data collected by two-long running accident studies in the UK; the Co-operative Crash Injury Study, which has been collecting information about car crashes in the UK since 1983 and On the Spot (OTS), a study started in the year 2000 that has been looking at car accidents in two areas – the Thames Valley and Nottinghamshire.

After analysing the data and calculating the delta-v (a measurement of the change in speed of a vehicle immediately before and just after a crash) the results were grouped according to the seriousness of the injuries suffered by the driver and plotted on a graph.  From this graph, the report estimates that in a frontal impact with a delta-v (change in speed) of 30mph, 3% of drivers would be killed.  Increasing the delta-v increased the percentage of drivers likely to be killed, with 19% estimated to die in a collision with a delta-v of 40mph and 65% at 50 mph.  A shocking 92% of drivers, when in a head-on collision where their vehicle slows by 60 mph are likely to suffer fatal injuries.

In side on collisions the statistics were even more dramatic, although the number of side impact crashes reported in the survey was much lower than the number of head-on collisions.  The graph for side impact crashes revealed that around 90% of drivers would lose their lives if involved in a side-impact crash where the delta-v was 40 mph.  This is probably due to the much lower level of protection at the side of a vehicle compared with the front, which would usually have several feet of engine and crumple zones between the driver and the other vehicle they are colliding with.

Accident claims following high speed crashes

According to the latest research then, if you get involved in a high speed crash, there is a depressingly high likelihood that you will, at the very least, suffer a very serious injury.  At Camps Solicitors, our road traffic accident lawyers know that the victims of high speed accidents will often be left with very serious injuries; injuries that in some cases might leave them needing round-the-clock medical care.  This care might be needed for weeks, months, years, or even for the rest of the victim’s life.

Providing the specialist care that a family member might need after being injured in a high speed accident can place a considerable financial burden on the rest of the family.  Making a No-Win No-Fee compensation claim with Camps Solicitors can help you to recover the costs of providing this care.  Your compensation claim could also cover other costs such as modifying your home to make it more accessible if your mobility has been affected by the accident.

Whatever your injuries, Camps will treat you with dignity and respect, whilst fighting hard for you to receive the maximum possible compensation for the injuries you have suffered.

  2. That is a sad story. I have written similar case studies relating to personal injury and particularly trffic accidents.

it’s not the speed that kills, it’s the deceleration. Even the injuries suffered at 30 mph can keep a victim off work for weeks.
