Nearly £170,000 in fines to be given out to speeding motorists
A temporary speed camera on a section of the M6 motorway in Cumbria has surprised motorists and the Highways Agency after it caught a record 5,569 people speeding in only 5 weeks.
The camera, set up to protect workmen carrying out repairs to a section of the motorway near to Carlisle, was installed at the end of January this year. It has been recording vehicles that exceed the temporary 50mph speed limit that is in place on the road whilst the repairs are carried out.
Transport bosses say they have been shocked at the sheer number of motorists prepared to drive at over 50mph through the half-mile section of roadworks. One Highways Agency Spokesman said:
“There’s a 50mph speed limit, cones, barriers and signs in place on this stretch of the M6 for a very good reason – to ensure the ongoing safety of drivers and road workers while the work is underway. We are concerned about the number of drivers who appear to be ignoring the speed limit, putting themselves and our workforce in danger. Driving through half a mile of roadworks at 70mph takes just ten seconds fewer than driving at 50mph – a ten-second saving which can put lives at risk.”
Due to the massive number of drivers who have broken the limit, speeding fines will only be sent out to those drivers who exceeded 60mph – more than 10mph above the limit. This will mean about 2,800 people should expect to receive £60 fines, which will raise a total of £168,000.
