Man who was left needing specialist care awarded over £3 million in accident compensation claim
Being involved in an accident can be devastating in terms of the impact it has on your life and your independence. One case that was reported in the press recently provides a perfect demonstration of the challenges that you can face after a serious accident and how a compensation claim can provide for your long term care. The case in question involved a man who was knocked down by a passing motorist as he crossed a road in South London.
The victim in this particular case was a man in his 40’s who, despite suffering from Asperger’s Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, had led a fairly independent life up until the day of the accident. The accident, which happened as this man was crossing the road in the company of a friend, completely changed the situation.
Severe spinal injuries that he suffered in the accident affected the victim’s dexterity and mobility, leaving him dependent on others for most, if not all, of his travel requirements. The effects on his manual dexterity meant he was unable to perform simple tasks such as fastening buttons and cutting up food. As well as the physical effects, the psychological impact of the accident was also severe. The victim was left traumatised and extremely anxious, requiring 24 hour care and attention.
Claiming for cost of future care
This tragic case shows the power of a personal injury compensation claim that includes the cost of future care. If the compensation award had been made on the basis of the victim’s injuries, as bad as they were, it is unlikely that the award made would have been even 1/10th of value.
The claim provided for the cost of round the clock specialist care that the victim, who lived with his elderly father, required. The financial provision brought stability to the victim’s life, as it removed the possibility that his family would not be able to afford the high costs of care that someone with his injuries required.
