The government has announced new plans to reduce speed limits in areas with high accident rates in a bid to cut road deaths. The plans will see a cut in speed limits from 30mph to 20mph in some urban areas and from 60mph to 50mph on rural roads. Cuts in the speed limits are part of the government’s road safety strategy for England and Wales and are designed to reduce road deaths through to 2020.
Reduced 20mph speed limits have already been trialled in cities such as Newcastle, Oxford and Leicester. Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick also announced the launch of a public consultation on road safety targets. Currently ministers have said they are on target to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 40% by 2010, but they are now considering a new target to reduce deaths by an additional third by 2020.
Other plans announced today include changes to the driving test, with the addition of a new section where candidates will be asked to drive without instructions from the examiner. There will also be the option to take a pre-qualification course leading to a shorter version of the driving theory test.
