70% of fatal road accidents occur in rural areas
Police forces north of the border have announced a crackdown on motorists who drive at excessive speeds on rural Scottish roads. Over three days this week, officers are increasing their patrols in country areas in a bid to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding along country lanes. They are also hoping to catch drivers and bikers who aren’t following the rules of the road.
The campaign is being co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland. One of their members, Chief Superintendent Charlie Common, of Lothian and Borders Police, said that. “Narrow roads, concealed entrances, wildlife, livestock, tight bends and blind summits are just some of the contributing factors which increase the risks to drivers. The speed limit for rural roads is 60mph but it is often too dangerous to travel at such a speed.”
It is not just speeding motorists that can expect to be pulled over during the campaign. Officers will also be targeting other dangerous driving habits, such as not wearing a seatbelt. With around 70% of fatal road collisions in Scotland occurring on rural routes, police forces across the country must be hoping that this big push will go some way towards reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on the road.
Rural road accident claims
Rural roads traditionally have a higher rate of accidents than either motorways or roads in urban areas. The lower traffic levels away from towns and cities tends to encourage motorists to drive at higher speeds and pay less attention to road safety. In the event of an accident, the isolation of many rural locations means that is can take much longer for emergency services to arrive on the scene to rescue people trapped in their vehicles and to provide medical treatment.
