According to a new study by YouGov, the average UK motorist is being charged an extra £31 a year to cover the cost of accidents caused by uninsured drivers, adding up to a total of £500M. It’s not surprising then that the survey also reveals that around 87% of motorists feel that there should be tougher penalties for uninsured drivers.
With the average fine for driving without insurance currently around £250, it is not surprising that there is little to deter some motorists from driving whilst uninsured. The effect that uninsured drivers have on road traffic accidents was also revealed. Over two thirds of those who had been involved in a road traffic accident (RTA) with an uninsured driver admitted to either paying for the repairs to their vehicle or claiming on their insurance policy and risking their no claims bonus in the process.
