Volvo working towards injury-free cars

Some good news for motorists from the United States – car maker Volvo is working towards an injury-free car that uses sonar and radar technology to allow it to avoid obstructions in the road. The Swedish manufacturer claims the new technology, which is built into the bumper of a vehicle, could substantially cut some of the 42,000 road deaths in the United States, not to mention the 3,150 killed on the road in the UK.

Using the sonar and radar information, scientists at Volvo’s research division say their vehicle will be able to create a “deformation zone”, allowing the vehicle to take evasive action to brake and steer itself. This is particularly useful in situations where a person may panic or fail to react quickly enough. The car maker has self-imposed a 2020 deadline for no deaths either in or caused by its cars.

In recent years there have been a number of very promising developments in car safety, with devices developed by other car companies including “breathalysers” that will prevent a vehicle from being started if the driver has consumed alcohol, and alertness sensors that sound an alarm to sleepy drivers if their car begins to drift. However many of these new technologies are yet to be widely introduced into today’s cars.
