Bad news for people concerned about hospital acquired infections. A quarter of NHS trusts have not met government hygiene standards, in spite of threats of closure if they failed to clean up their acts.
An annual check by the Healthcare Commission found that despite the introduction of a number of measures over the last 12 months, such as the Hygiene Code and a £50 million programme deep cleaning 93% of hospital wards, standards are still being missed. A key area where many trusts struggled was in the decontamination of surgical instruments, which is worrying for people undergoing surgical procedures.
