What do new US President Barack Obama, Leonardo DaVinci, Bruce Willis and Jimi Hendrix have in common? Well apart from all being very talented at what they do, they are all left-handers. Around 7 percent of the population are left handed, and whilst scientific studies have identified many areas in which left-handers excel, recent research seems to point towards left handed people being more accident prone than their right-handed counterparts.
The research indicates that whilst left handed people may have a general tendency to be better at some sports, such as tennis, and creative arts than right handed people, in terms of accidents, it is left-handers who are more likely to injure themselves in an accident or whilst driving. This can partly be put down to the functions of the sides of the brain. In right handed people it is the left side of the brain, which controls the perception of distance, that is dominant, but in left handed people, it is the right hand side of the brain that is more dominant.
A poorer perception of distance means that in certain situations, such as driving, left handed people are at a disadvantage to right-handers. This explains why an American study found that left handed male drivers were the group most likely to be treated in hospital for injuries in a road traffic accident.
