Portugese worker dies whilst at work in Rochdale
The death of a Portuguese worker at a plastics manufacturer in Rochdale has resulted in the company being fined £140,000.
Abel Lages was reported to be clearing up a spill at TS (UK) Ltd when a wooden pallet, holding 55 bags of polypropylene fell on him.
Polypropylene is used to make buckets, plastic boxes and washing up bowls along with many other plastic goods.
However the material is very dangerous when stacked as it can spill out of the smallest hole in a bag, causing the stack to become unstable.
Mr Lages, who was 38, was found in the yard trapped underneath the bags and died of his injuries at the scene.
The Health and Safety Executive successfully prosecuted TS (UK) on the grounds that they breached section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at work Act 1974.
The manufacturing sector can be very dangerous, with 32 deaths and over 22,000 serious injuries last year alone.
