Injury caused by automated robot could lead to claim
A Birmingham vehicle firm has been fined £30,000 after a worker was struck by an automated robot, which could lead to a personal injury accident claim.
Dura Automotive Body and Glass Systems received the sanction after Michael Brewer was struck in the throat after the machine was left on automatic, causing damage to his voice box and nerves down one side of his body.
Mr Brewer had ventured inside a guarded area to see how the operating cycle of the machine was working.
The HSE found that the company did have a system in place for accessing the machine, but it wasn’t supervised well enough.
Since the incident took place, the company has installed viewing panels in the protective guard, so the machine can be viewed from the outside.
HSE inspector Edward Fryer remarked that “keeping the robot on the automatic cycle in these circumstances could very well have resulted in automatic death.”
