Welsh train drivers win compensation for injuries
The painful work-related injury carpal tunnel syndrome hit the headlines again this week when 3 train drivers working for Arriva Trains Wales were awarded compensation after developing the condition whilst at work. Between them, the three staff members were awarded over £22,000 in compensation, for their injuries and for the time they had to take off work due to the condition.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, caused by compression of the nerves leading from the hand to the arm, can be caused by poorly designed work equipment. If the environment you work in, the way you are told to work, or the equipment you are using puts too much pressure on your wrists, then the soft tissue in them can swell up, pressing on the nerves and causing the numbness and loss of feeling in the hands associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
In the case of the three train drivers, they successfully claimed that the poor design and layout of the controls on board the trains they were driving had caused damage to the nerves in their wrists which lead to the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome. The claims, which were supported by the train drivers’ union ASLEF, could allow other workers who have suffered injury and poor health from cramped conditions and repetitive work to make personal injury compensation claims.
