A new initiative has been launched in the West Midlands to provide small businesses with free access to advice on Health and Safety issues, in an effort to save them time and money, and also to reduce the level of workplace accidents. The idea of a one stop shop providing advice on health and safety, as well as employment law has been recommended by an independent review, as part of government targets to cut costs for small businesses by £800million a year.
With small and medium sized businesses spending around £1.4billion on external advice about regulation, free service should save money for the three-quarters of business that currently pay for this advice. Other proposals in the report included setting out a quick start summary for each regulation or piece of advice, so that businesses knew which essential actions they should carry out to comply with the laws.
Providing free advice to small and medium businesses is a welcome move to cut down on the number of workplace accidents and injuries. Each year in the UK there are around 1.6 million workplace accidents, leading to around 20 million workdays being lost to injury. The financial cost to the UK economy runs into the billions, it is therefore not surprising that business and government are keen to push the new initiative forward.
Camps Solicitors have 25 years experience making compensation claims on behalf of people injured in accidents at work that were not their fault. In many cases these accidents were down to companies’ failure to adhere to Health and Safety Regulations, leading to unsafe systems of work and a high risk that an employee might be injured.
