3 fatal accidents at work involving slips, trips and falls in North West last year
1,751 people were seriously injured during accidents at work in the North West last year, according to figures released by the Health and Safety Executive as it stepped up its “Shattered Lives” campaign. The new campaign is aimed at preventing deaths and serious injuries in the workplace that are estimated to cost £800 million each year.
According to the HSE, the most common cause of workplace deaths are falls from height. A fall from height is any fall from more than 2 metres above the ground or the surface the person is falling from. The next most common causes are trips and slips and between them these three types of accidents form a majority of all workplace injuries.
Raising awareness of common accidents at work
The Shattered Lives campaign has been devised by the Health and Safety Executive to raise awareness of the risks of common accidents at work. Several particularly accident-prone industries will be targeted including health and social care, education, food manufacturing and retail, catering and hospitality, building and plant maintenance and the construction industry.
As part of the campaign the HSE has launched a new Shattered Lives website, with information on cost effective changes that employers can make to workplaces to reduce the chance that one of their employees will be injured in an accident at work. The website features online guides aimed at providing practical advice on avoiding trips, slips and falls in the workplace.
