Further warnings of the financial impact on companies who fail to carry out sufficient risk assessment procedures to ensure their employees’ safety have been issued by the Health and Safety Executive as part of its “Shattered Lives” campaign. The HSE has highlighted the case of a company prosecuted after one of its drivers broke his ankle on some decking near a diesel pump.
The accident shows the importance of carrying out a through risk assessment procedure on all areas of a business premises. The decking that caused the accident was situated near to a diesel pump in the Coventry depot used by the drivers of the Basingstoke-based Sunlight Services Group Ltd. to refill their trucks. The driver was injured after slipping as he prepared to refill his vehicle. As the site was unstaffed at the time of the accident, he was alone for 20 minutes before he managed to contact his wife by mobile phone, and an ambulance was called.
Sunlight Services Group was also found guilty of failing to ensure that the floors of the workplace were suitable for the purpose for which they were used and that they were not slippery. As it was, the injured man had managed only two steps after leaving his vehicle before he slipped and injured himself. Ambulance crews had to remove some of the unsafe decking before attempting to move the victim, as it was too slippery for them to walk on.
Camps Solicitors have a proven track record of helping people claim compensation after being injured at work, often as a result of a failure by their employers to follow health and safety procedures or to conduct a proper risk assessment.
