16 children affected by exposure to toxic chemicals before birth
The long running court battle fought by the families of sixteen children for compensation for their birth defects has ended in a landmark victory for the claimants. High Court Judges ruled that the defects had been caused by exposure to toxic materials released during work by Corby Borough Council at a disused steel plant in the town.
Between the mid 80’s and the late 90’s, Corby Steelworks, once one of the largest industrial sites in Europe, was demolished by contractors appointed by Corby Borough Council. They were tasked with removing the toxic waste that had accumulated in the buildings and the ground at the site, which once provided jobs for 10,000 local people before it closed in 1980. However those working on the clean up operation were found to be negligent in the way they dealt with the toxic wastes, which led to many thousands of people being exposed to a “soup of toxic materials” over a period of 15 years.
Corby Borough Council liable in public nuisance, negligence and breach of statutory duty
Speaking at the end of the trial, Judge Mr Justice Akenhead said of Corby Borough Council, “There was an extended period between 1983 and 1997 in which Corby Borough Council was extensively negligent in its control and management of the sites which the had acquired from British Steel… Corby Borough Council is liable in public nuisance, negligence and breach of statutory duty…” The judge also said that the level of birth defects in the children of women who lived or worked near the site was “statistically significant.”
The children of those exposed suffered from a variety of birth defects, most often deformities of the arms and hands. Many of children were born with missing fingers and thumbs, and some have been left in constant pain as a result of deformities in their bones. As well as the deformities, a higher level of cancerous tumours has been reported in children in the local area, when compared with the national average.

Thanks for your interesting article. Other thing is that mesothelioma is generally the result of the breathing of fibers from asbestos, which is a cancer causing material. It truly is commonly observed among staff in the engineering industry who definitely have long experience of asbestos. It can also be caused by residing in asbestos insulated buildings for a long time of time, Family genes plays an important role, and some folks are more vulnerable to the risk when compared with others.I should say also believe that mesothelioma cancer is a scarce form of many forms of cancer that is normally found in individuals previously exposed to asbestos. Cancerous cellular material form inside mesothelium, which is a protecting lining which covers almost all of the body’s organs. These cells commonly form from the lining with the lungs, belly, or the sac which encircles one’s heart. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Thanks for the helpful write-up. It is also my opinion that mesothelioma has an really long latency time period, which means that the signs of the disease would possibly not emerge right until 30 to 50 years after the preliminary exposure to asbestos fiber. Pleural mesothelioma, that is certainly the most common sort and impacts the area round the lungs, might cause shortness of breath, upper body pains, plus a persistent cough, which may bring about coughing up bloodstream. Thanks for your valuable post. As time passes, I have come to be able to understand that the symptoms of mesothelioma cancer are caused by the build up of fluid between the lining of the lung and the chest muscles cavity. The sickness may start from the chest spot and pass on to other parts of the body. Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma cancer include losing weight, severe inhaling and exhaling trouble, temperature, difficulty ingesting, and inflammation of the face and neck areas. It needs to be noted some people with the disease tend not to experience every serious indications at all. It’s my belief that mesothelioma can be the most lethal cancer. It contains unusual properties. The more I really look at it a lot more I am confident it does not behave like a true solid tissues cancer. In the event that mesothelioma is usually a rogue virus-like infection, in that case there is the potential for developing a vaccine in addition to offering vaccination for asbestos open people who are open to high risk associated with developing long run asbestos relevant malignancies. Thanks for discussing your ideas for this important health issue.
